Feb. 11th, 2005 10:10 pmI went and saw Phantom of the Opera tonight. It... was good. I think it couldn't decide between being an all-out movie and a stage musical. There were scenes that could only work if it were one or the other, but it kept changing, keeping me confused. Eh. Oh, well.
The voices on my cherished original soundtrack are way better, too. And wow. Heh. The one part, the part that makes or breaks any movie production of Phantom, The Face, was... How to put it? I looked and I thought, "Whoa. Is that... all? Huh." Of course, worlds better than the over-the-top Phantom faces I've seen in years past, but still. Underwhelmed and overwhelmed both leave you in an undesirable state of... uh... whelming? Never mind, I give up.
And then... Raoul's nose. Yeah. Christine so should have gone with the Phantom.
Also--and I blame Dr Gunther for this-- I looked at several aspects of this more critically than I would have in times past. Raoul? He only wanted her because she was pretty and she sang good. Phantom? Same thing... but HE was willing to give her up to his enemy. Plus... he wasn't bad looking, either. Even with The Face. And at least he listened to Christine a bit, unlike Mr You're Coming With Me To Dinner Missy Whether You Want To Or Not. And... now I'll have to go back and read the book again and listen to my soundtrack... but I hadn't realized how objectified Christine was. Hmm. What I really want to do now is talk it over with Dr Gunther and my old Film Studies class.
But... important thing was I was diverted. I went out with a friend and saw a pretty movie with pretty people and pretty music.

Date: 2005-02-13 05:40 pm (UTC)And yes, the Phantom was scary and stalkerish in the best stalkerish style [he even had a wedding dress picked out for her-- yike] he at least was able to [after a bit of psychotic raving] see that it was better if Christine made her own choices for herself. Raoul? No way! She's gonna be the mother of his kids, by golly! Gah.
And dang. Objectification to the point that I could hardly watch some scenes. *shakes fist in feminine fury*

Date: 2005-02-12 11:30 pm (UTC)I went around work all day today humming Phantom songs. Everyone was like, "Shut up, Samantha!" I just smiled and kept on humming. And trying not to think about the nose.
