stoopbeckUsually, when I eat something, I am immediately sent back in memory to the first time I tried that particular food item, or the most memorable time I ate that item, or whatever.
But I had grits tonight, and instead of thinking immediately about any of the number of times I've consumed grits in my youth, what sprung to the foreground of my mind was this one time when I was seven or eight and I went with my class to a science/natural history museum, and there was an exhibit of how the Native Americans ground up corn for bread, and you could take this huge rock and place a handful of dried corn kernels into the bowl-shaped grindstone, and pound and grind away until you had this granular, dusty yellow stuff, and I remember looking at it and thinking, "Wow, I just made grits."
