Gah... no more.
Oct. 4th, 2004 08:04 amOkay. So I've learned my lesson. I had previously resolved not to express my opinions about the upcoming Presidential election, and I had kept pretty well to that. People are just going crazy about it, and it's really not worth getting into. So what do I do this weekend? I get into one knock-down, drag-out, bad politics fight, and then a good friend of mine started in on me. I had had an interesting week already [for "interesting" read "oh, god, make it stop..."] and this was just the final straw. Usually our talks brighten my day-- it's nice to talk with someone who actually knows what they're talking about, and who is witty and well-spoken. So why did we have to bring in politics? I'm so tired of this... Usually it's only religion I can't talk about, since I've grown up around Baptists and Presbyterians and Methodists and others, who find Catholics and Episcopals to be the devil incarnate, but now... politics are definitely out too.
What upset me the most is that both of us were so convinced we were right... and equally convinced the other was spouting propaganda. It doesn't matter what arguements we made, what sparkling examples of wit were shown... we'll never see eye-to-eye.
What is this? In my English class, lectures are constantly peppered with political asides. People are being told they're idiots for thinking the way they do politically-- in class. Class is not about politics. Class should be for learning about the subject matter. [Unless, of course, said subject matter... is politics, in which case class totally should be about politics...] People are too wound up, myself included. I really don't need to stroke out over this.
My conclusion? I'm just going to put on some nice apathy cream and play dumb the next time someone tries to engage me in political conversation. Because it's obvious we're not going to resolve this overnight.

and yes no more political debate.....we have the political debate comming to Arizona State next week..and it sucks because the campus is being taken over my secret service and if your on campus you must wear your ID card at all times and no backpacks are allowed on campus. Most people are canceling classes that day but NOOOO my culture and health teacher refuses to cancel class and that class is the same time as the debate.
