Family stuff.
Oct. 16th, 2006 04:10 pmSo, the reason I've been incommunicado for the last forever:
My grandmother's been in the hospital for the last week. She died yesterday. But she was surrounded by her children, and my brother and I represented the grandchildren, and her beloved cousin came to see her, and it was a peaceful end, as my mother keeps reiterating. Now we're just waiting for the rest of the grandchildren to arrive for the funeral on Wednesday.
Food has already arrived. Grandma's tiny house is bursting with food right now. I don't know how it is in other places, but here the way we deal with grief or sorrow or bad health is to shower the unfortunate with tons and tons of food. And I mean tons. Sandwiches and soups and roasts and hams, but also tomato aspic, and various congealed salads (yes, ew, but they are GOOD), and cakes, and pies, and mashed potatoes, and one old friend of my grandmother heard the death announcement in church and rushed out and bought a cantelope because it was the only thing she could think to buy. Yay the South.
