Back in the day....
Oct. 6th, 2004 06:38 amSo yesterday my day was filled with bittersweet goodness. I had several papers due, and almost none of my many problems that so plague my daily existance had changed, and most of the food I ate was terrible-- and yet, I was the happiest I've felt for at least a month. I cleaned my room for the first time in forever. I made my bed for the first time since moving in. I (and this is so sad, and yet so funny, and yet... so, so sad) even skipped down the hallway (lightly... not like the elephant footrace upstairs) with a huge grin plastered on my face, singing "Dona Nobis Pacem." Really. Yeah. I know. Don't ask. Like I said, ridiculously happy.
And then I realized just how much has changed since my childhood. We reminisced for what seems like hours about all of these shows and toys that used to mean so much to me. Like, anyone remember My Buddy and Kid Sister? I remember begging for Kid Sister for sooooo long... and I totally loved her forever. Well... forever at least until somehow in a move or perhaps in washing her her head somehow got turned around so it's on backwards now, and all her clothes went the way of doll clothes, and the stuffing on her neck got extremely weak so her head flops randomly, so I was sorting through some old stuff the other day, and this doll flops over, her backwards head wobbles menacingly, and her eyes shoot open. Gah.
Or My Little Ponies? God, I loved my My Little Ponies. Sadly enough, I can still sing the show's theme song [that and almost any other jingle or theme song from anything I watched, apparently], and I still remember all my Ponies. And there was one whose body wasn't made from the solid colored plastic, but from some kind of glitter plastic or something? A unicorn with purple eyes... I gave her to my cousin, an act that I regretted almost as soon as it happened, but there you go.
Or Skip-It? "Skip-It, Skip-It, the very best thing of all, There's a counter on this ball..."
Or "Earth!" "Wind!" "Fire!" "Water!" and... wait for it... "Heart!" O---kay? I always wondered just who the heck invited that kid. What a wimpy power! Yeah, while your buds are blasting away at Random Ecological Damage Villian Of The Week with their nifty power rings, what will yours do? I get all the others... but where exactly do you fit in, kid?
Or Care Bears? Anyone remember when what's-her-face--- evil girl-- and.. whatever her cringing minion was, when they did a cooking show? Oh... really? Well, I do... Or Fraggle Rock? Or Sesame Street? Or Reading Rainbow? [More lyrics that randomly surface... "Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high..."] Or LiteBrite? PlayDoh? Gumby? Pee-Wee Herman? "Hammer Time?" TaleSpin? ["Oh-Ee-Oh, Talespin... Oh-Ee-Ay, Talespin..."] Or Darkwing Duck? Mr Rogers? ["Can you say antidisestablishmentarianism? I knew you could!"] David the Gnome? Maya the Bee? [well-- I'm the only one I know of who still vaguely recollects poor Maya...] Muppet Babies? Rainbow Brite? Or all the crazy music videos back when there was still the "M" aspect of MTV?
Where did all the good shows and toys go? What do they have now that could possibly compare with the wacky and strange and quite often disturbing but at least it was better than the pre-packaged stuff they feed kids nowadays... God I'm getting so old...
