Mollies are supposedly the perfect fish: hardy, peaceful, calm, pretty colors and whatnot. One of the first things people say about them is how well they get along with other fish.

So, of course, for whatever reason, it appears that we've managed to purchase the fightinest darn mollies you ever did see.

At first, things weren't that bad. There were two of them, both variations of black and gold, very pretty. Then the one with orange fins started picking on the smaller one with black fins. So we promptly named them Odo and Quark [yay for the maybe two of you out there who'll get that] and put Odo [orange fins] in isolation [a breeding net thing; it sits in the same water but the fish can't touch each other]. After a few days, we released him back into the community tank. Quark's first action? To nuzzle Odo. Quark's second action? To try to kill Odo. It was horrifying.

Then Quark got to spend time in isolation [hehe, a "holding cell," as it were]. Odo spent all of his time visibly taunting Quark through the mesh. Luckily, then we set up a new tank, right next to the current tank. As soon as it was ready, Quark got put in there. After exploring for a moment, he zoomed over to the shared wall between the tanks. Odo did as well. They've spent the last ten hours trying to kill each other through two layers of glass. It's still horrifying.

The only thing keeping them calm is the other fish, a platy we've named Moogie, who dives between Odo and the glass and keeps him away from it [and Quark] constantly.

Ah, fish.
