stoopbeckMy brother and I argue. A lot. No, really. Whenever we're together, we're always arguing about stupid things... what to watch, what episode of a show was the best, who's turn it is to do dishes, who hit whom [he did it!]...
Two weekends ago we took it to a new level by getting into a fist fight over whether or not a certain beloved character in the Harry Potter series really has joined the choir invisible in J K Rowling's latest book. My opinion is 'dead is dead,' but he thought otherwise. Eh, long story short, it got ugly fast.
This week we put our creative energy to a more productive cause. I don't know about anyone else, but I HATED Gary Oldman as Sirius Black. HATE. [I won't even get started on Lupin.] So we decided to come up with a better one.
Our choices ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous, and it rapidly turned into a competition. My brother clearly won. He said, and I quote, "My SOCK would make a better Sirius than Gary Oldman." And the worst part? He was right. I don't know what they were thinking when they chose him. Actually, I don't know what they were thinking throughout the entire movie. Would it have killed them to explain who the Marauders were? Or... but that's for another post.
So what are the requirements for Sirius Black? Okay, well, [1] obviously dark hair, but that's not exactly a necessary thing, seing as how Alan Rickman[!] has sort of sandy hair in reality... [2] not really dog-like features, but it has to be believable that he'd turn into a giant dog. Gary Oldman? A marmot, maybe... Dog? Nope. [3] The character is a subtle one, so the actor would have to put several different layers into his portrayal of Black. I saw one-- the crazy crazy layer. Bleah, Mr Oldman. BLEAH. Who could do it better? Hmm... to name a few: Rufus Sewell, Hugh Jackman, James Purefoy, Alexander Siddig, my brother's sock... all better qualified than the person chosen. Makes me mad.
Speaking of mad, when's the next book coming out? Never? Really, JK, just because you're the richest woman in England, that doesn't give you the right to leave us hanging like this. I did hear that it might come out next summer... maybe... if we all clap our hands and say, "I do believe in fairies! I do! I do!"

I think it's awful casting, much like most of the casting in these movies. For God's sake, there are women lusting over Voldemort now! That's just wrong! The dude isn't even supposed to look human--he's got like a hideous snake face! I just think that having a man as fine as Ralph Fiennes will be very distracting. Even if they get an awesome mask going for him, we'll still know it's him under there.
And also? What a waste of a good-looking actor. Fiennes should have been cast as Sirius or Remus. Instead we get Crazy Gary Oldman as Sirius, a character who's supposed to be devilishly handsome under the tired and sunken face that was gifted to him by years in Azkaban mourning the murder of his best friend James. *sniffle* Or should I say *snuffle*
I am SO bitter about these movies, yo."

"I love Alan Rickman too. But...and please, no one attack me...I don't like him as Snape. He's very watchable as whoever it is he's playing in these movies, but it's just not Snape. He's not anything like the Snape I've ever had in my head. First of all, the hair. What the hell? Snape does not have a thick shiny black wig. He has oily, stringy, scraggly hair. And he's waaay younger than Alan Rickman. Yeah, yeah, I know, everyone's ages are messed up in the movies, but I'm a purist and I can't stand it. And Rickman just exudes elegance, poise, and authority in this role. Snape just shouldn't have that. Snape tries to exude all those things, but the fact that he's trying shows.
But y'all can just ignore me. I'm a purist, so I don't think my opinion counts very much."

Date: 2004-09-13 04:04 pm (UTC)And Snape... As much as I love Alan Rickman[!], I have noticed that I'm a lot more sympathetic towards Snape now that I have Alan Rickman as my mental image of him. Even when he's being purely evil, like when he makes the comment about Hermione's teeth, or when he's about to turn Sirius and Lupin in to the Dementors, I think "Aww, poor Snape, it's all their fault somehow" because AlanRickmanSnape wouldn't be evil, would he?
I think he makes a good Snape, don't get me wrong, but it's got me all confused in my feelings towards the character. But for all the purists out there, JKR, as one of her conditions when they made the movies, said that Alan Rickman had to play Snape... so she must see something of the character in him, if that makes sense...
And I'm glad other people feel that way about Crazy Gary Oldman... Bleah... I mean, seriously [hee... every time I say or write that, I think "serious. Sirius!"] what actor would turn down playing a part in a Harry Potter movie? Most of them are jumping for it! So why, WHY, couldn't they have gotten someone more Sirius-y?
What do you think about it all?
