Oh eighties self-help books, how I love you.
From The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense (published in 1980):
a) This is so far from my own childhood experience that I'm not entirely sure what to say.
b) But I wanted to beat my cute little fists against the hairy chests of the male oppressors in my life! :( I like how there isn't even the option of the boss or the professor being female.
c) FEMALES HAVE NO VERBAL SKILLZ, YO. THIS IS BECAUSE WE ARE TOO BUSY WORKING ON OUR WILES TO, YOU KNOW, LEARN HOW TO SPEAK. OR SOMETHING.
Children are often highly skilled in verbal confrontations with their parents, especially in Blamer Mode. Male children hone their skills and increase them as they grow older. Female children are somewhat more likely to accomplish what they want by virtue of their "adorableness," and to rely on their dimples and curls and sitting in people's laps being cute. In the process they forget any verbal skills they might otherwise have acquired, and when they cease to be adorable and are too big to climb into laps anymore, they are utterly vulnerable. If a woman is able to convince a man that she is cute and adorable, it may work. But it is unlikely to work on anyone except a man with whom she is living in an intimate relationship of some kind. Beating your cute little fists against the hairy chest of your boss, your professor, your male colleagues, and so on, WILL NOT WORK. That may be why systems of this kind are ordinarily recommended to women who prefer to remain within the confines of the home; and it shows great good sense on the part of those who devise them that they see this and state it quite frankly in their books, articles, and lectures.

I thought cute fists beating on hairy men's chests is only in the movies or in tacky chick lit.

Also, it didn't say that professors or bosses can't be female. It just said that they have hairy breasts. *wonders if her boss has hairy breasts and what her husband says about that*
Talking and communication is so overrated.
no subject
YOU'RE RIGHT. So only people with hairy breasts can be in power! *muses*
Seriously. Who wants to communicate, anyway? That's just not cool. All the cool kids are batting their eyelashes and falling into people's laps. Apparently.
no subject
That means Hugh is good to get into power and Callum is out of luck. :D
Though Callum does have a bit of brest hair. It is just only a little and blond and he sometimes shaves it for nude scenes for some kind of weird reason.
Exactly. Communication is so overrated. We should get back to the days where everything was settles with a hit to the head.
Did you watch Flashpoint Thursday? I just watched. A bit too little Hugh, but I liked the ep again. :D

Poor Callum. :D I don't know why guys shave their chests for nude scenes. Chest hair is hot! Unless it's Chuck Norris's chest hair in that Bruce Lee movie, where it looks like he's strapped a rug to his chest. But other than that. :P
So many arguments would be avoided if we just went back to those simpler times! Just one hit to the head and hey, problem solved!
Way too little Hugh. But we did have that bit in the beginning where he was a "bad guy," which was fun. And his eyes were really pretty in this episode. Also, I am still very much in love with this show. <3

He was shaved in Due South and Last Night and I think Trapped, but not in Flower and Garnet or Suspicous River. Callum has no Chuck NOrris chest hair. I will go to the spammy place and spam with some naked Callum chest now so we have things to
drool overtalk about in detail. :DHehe. Yeah, I loved that. I also loved that he fake shot both hostages. Like his colleague didn't have the right to shoot Jules. :D
I love this show and how it concentrates on the psychological aspects. Even Sam was not as annoying as he usually is. I have hope for that boy. :D
Greg was really great, though.
Do we know what happened to his family? There are hints in every ep, but I have the feeling I missed something.
Oh, and I loved Ed's eyes when they are confronting George inside the bank. Due to the lighting on the show they looked yellow. :D

And he was so matter-of-fact about it! Just, bang-bang, they're dead, you messed up again! I think they have fun breaking in the new guy. I'm totally starting to like Sam, which I would not have guessed as of last week. But he was so cute, with his, "But the book says..." and "This is what you're supposed to be doing!" and all the pouting. It's because he's hanging around the awesome people. Some of that is finally wearing off.
Greg was AWESOME. He totally pwned this episode, even when things went bad. And the ending! *nuzzles him*
There was a divorce? I think? And he hasn't seen his son in years? Did you see the episode with the father who held up the wing of the hospital so that his daughter could have a heart? They went into more details on that episode than any of the others, but they're still doling out a little bit more each ep.
I want to see more of Ed's family, too...
OMG YES. So pretty! The lighting was super-awesome on the eyes in this ep. At one point, Greg's eyes were also just gorgeous.

PHOTOBUCKET IS DOING MAINTENANCE RIGHT NOW. I HAVE NO ACCESS TO NAKED CALLUM!
Bad timing, photobucket, bad timing. I will get back on that task, though. Cause I have a theory about him shaving his chest when his character is supposed to be much younger than he himself is. THough Ray doesn't fit that theory, but we will see.
GIVE ME NAKED CALLUM, PHOTOBUCKET!
Yeah, Hugh rocked that scene.
I like that Greg wrote the book, so even if Sam knows it by heart, Greg still knows more. :D
I like that he saw that Greg was really tense and that he went to check up on him. That gave him major plus points in my book. Hopefully he'll manage to keep that up.
I think they might even be dead. Cause I can't imagine Greg being the father to not see his kid ever. I think, even if the mother of his kid moved to another country or continent or whatever, he'd spend his vacation time there so he'll at least see some of his kid.
The way he kinda forces Ed in the first ep to focus on family more, cause else there will be nothing left when he retires and especially the hospital ep, but also this one now where he totally feels for the guy when he learns his wife is in a nursing home dying give me the impression that he lost his family somehow. Maybe an accident or maybe some criminal he busted went after them? Oy. I need to stop my brain right here.
I just think a divorce would not be strong enough to keep him from his kid. Though maybe the kid died and then the marriage got divorced? We don't know.
I missed Clark. He is great. I loved the call last week where Ed asked Clark to play some basketball, even though he would have preferred hockey. :D
*hopes for a Hugh hockey scene eventually*
Darn, I got your edit too late. :p
The lighting is always rather good. First I was a bit "oh, this could be too yellowish", but it works better than most shows with their blue filter, cause it is warmer and this show is more about the feelings and emotions and everything than about the cold action and shooting and explosions and whatnot.

I know! That right there. And that he waited for Greg to tell him, "Yeah, okay, I could use some help," and it was just a really nice way to end it.
I thought they were dead, but then I wasn't so sure. Because it would have helped him more if he'd told the dad with the dying girl that his kid died, and he just told him that he'd divorced and didn't see them anymore. But it would still make sense if they were dead.
I don't know how much sense that made. It's way late and I shoudl probably have gone to bed a couple of hours ago. But yeah.
I do agree that he seems like the kind of guy who wouldn't let his kid's life go by without, you know, being there.
Ohh, I forgot! He brings the girl the glove that he got for his kid, right? That right there could totally mean the kid is dead, because if the kid were alive, he could have called him or visited him with the glove. But since we didn't see that.... he's totally dead.
Unless the show decides otherwise.
That was really cute last week. He's trying so hard to be a good dad!
*crosses fingers for hockey*
I got your earlier edit too late, too. You know, I didn't even think about how the lighting fit in with the emotions, but it's totally true. And it looks so good on the actors as well. ;D
I hope that this comment was at least semi-coherent. It made sense to be, but I am also tired. :D

He didn't say he could use help, he said a second pair of eyes could not hurt so that Sam will get a bit more experience through revising the case and that he'll understand what is going on during negotiations. So it is practically a teaching thing. Greg does not need help from a grasshopper. :p
Not sure if it had really helped him to admit that his kid is dead in that case. Especially not if it was a sudden death. Also, if the father had made him focus on talking about his own kid, he might have lost concentration due to the pain or whatever. I haven't read Greg's book yet. So all we know is that he didn't lie. But he totally didn't tell everything there is about it.
And yeah, you are right. I forgot the glove. I think that was what triggered the "his kid is dead" impression the most for me. Cause if he weren't, he could have sent it via mail as a Christmas/birthday present at the least.
Gah, I wanna know what is going on with the kid now.
Also, I liked how they changed Clark's age form 15 to 13. He looked way too young for 15 anyway. Who came up with that age for the previews?
I loved the "I like rock and hockey and my son plays the chello and basketball" line. :D
And how disappointed he was that Clark doesn't fight but goes telling on his classmates to other teachers. Awwwwwww. Poor Ed, something went wrong there. :D
You just know that if Ed were a schoolmate of Clarks, he'd beat him up regularly.
But that makes me love so much more that he actually tries to stay close to his kid even though there are less and less things they have in common. *snuggles Ed and Clark*
It is semi-coherent, but maybe you should go to bed now.
There will be naked Callum for you in the morning.

I know Greg didn't really need help, but was giving the kid some more experience. :P I just thought it was a nice mutual thing, the kid not wanting to leave Greg alone to be sad about how things turned out, and Greg molding him into a better member of the team.
I really hope they give us more backstory on everyone, and that we get the mystery of Greg's kid solved!
Dude, he so did not look 15.
He works so hard at being a good dad! That is so impressive to me. He could easily be all, "YOU'RE GOING TO PLAY HOCKEY AND LIKE IT," which is what happens a lot in those situations.
no subject
Yes, it was nice that both of them realized the other might need a bit help in one way or another and that it went so well with the other ones needs that they both stayed in and worked through the case again.
That would be kind of awesome. CBS seems to like the show. Which is good. I hope they'll get more than 13 eps.
I know. But they casted for a 15 year old. And maybe the actor even is 15, but he looks more like 12, so 13 works much better.
I mean, they tried to cast Callum's character on Californication as a mid 30s guy. And Callum can't pull that off anymore. I guess David suggested he'd apply and he just convinced everyone and now it is more like a 40 something guy. :D
Yeah, I know. I have the strange feeling that if Mike Sweeney would have had sons instead of daughters, he'd forced them to play hockey.
Btw. amazon.ca has Durham County on preorder. Just in case you would want more Hugh goodness. Of the much creepier and darker kind.
